The Evening Intensive Outpatient Program (EIOP) at Cornerstone Recovery Center implements The SMART Recovery® track to help treat drug and alcohol addictionin South Florida. SMART stands for Self Management And Recovery Training. Whether you’re dealing with addictive and compulsive behaviors or substance abuse, the SMART Recovery track has tools and techniques that can help you replace self-destructive behaviors with healthier options. SMART Recovery is a science-based curriculum built upon well-established scientific approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) and Motivational Interviewing. SMART Recovery isn’t a 12-step based drug rehab program but it does compliment and can be a supplement for those who attend AA or NA 12-step based programs.
SMART Recovery utilizes a 4-point plan:
- Building and maintaining motivation
- Coping with urges
- Managing thoughts, feelings and behaviors
- Living a balanced life
As noted earlier, many of the tools and techniques used in SMART Recovery come from REBT. Often, people who are struggling with addiction can exaggerate their thoughts about the events in their lives. These exaggerated thoughts can influence their feelings about the event. In other words, how we think influences how we feel which influences how we act. Many of our clients’ problems with substance abuse begin with how they react to life’s events. They may use alcohol or drugs to deal with irrational thoughts or excessive emotions. SMART Recovery techniques help our clients learn how to change their way of thinking so they can feel and behave in healthier, more productive ways.
While some of the SMART Recovery principles may be different than 12-step principles, many of our clients find that working with more than one program at the same time benefits their recovery.
In future blogs, we will take a more in-depth look at the 4 points of SMART Recovery and the tools, techniques and exercises we use in our Evening Intensive Outpatient Program here at Cornerstone Recovery Center.
