After 5 long years, U.S. health officials finally unveiled final regulations for the 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which was approved late last year; it means equal insurance coverage for mental illnesses and addiction. Specifically, the new regulations require insurance companies to cover treatment for drug or alcohol addiction and mental illnesses in the same way they cover physical illnesses.
Just to be clear, it does not mean that insurance companies are compelled to cover all aspects of treatment. Rather, it means that all of the co-pays, treatment limits, and deductibles must be in line with those for physical illnesses. This is still a huge victory for tens of thousands of clients with mental illnesses or addiction that previously could not afford treatment because it was not covered by insurance. Until now, there were no mental health laws or addiction treatment laws to make treatment coverage affordable, and many people did not get the treatment they needed because the cost for treatment was out of reach. Now, this new insurance coverage puts treatment within reach.
Does My Insurance Cover Addiction Treatment?
The answer to this question still depends on your individual policy. However, there is a greater chance than ever before that clients can have at least a portion of their addiction treatment covered. They would only be responsible for co-pays or deductibles; the same co-pay or deductible that they would pay for other medical care for physical illnesses. What makes this new law even more favorable for those seeking treatment, is that when it is combined with The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), insurance companies cannot deny coverage for pre-existing mental illness or history of addiction.
