If you haven’t attended a Family Night yet, there are two opportunities for you to attend in August. Our next Family Night is Friday, August 1st, 2014 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The second Family Night event in August will be Friday, August 15, 2014 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. We would love for you to join us. You will be surprised how much you can learn and share in one evening.
Family Night is held at our Ft. Lauderdale drug and alcohol addiction recovery center. Our belief at Cornerstone is that addiction is a family disease that affects everyone, not only the person battling addiction. Based on that philosophy, we developed Family Night so that family members and loved ones of those affected by addiction can learn and support each other to know they are not alone. All who attend are encouraged to share, listen, learn, and heal from the discussion.
Last month’s Family Night on July 18th was another successful event. All of the attendees participated in the group discussion. Some of the participants included family members of loved ones with co-occurring disorders (co-occurring disorders mean that a client is diagnosed with substance abuse problems or addiction as well as another diagnosis, such as a mental health issues or post-traumatic stress disorder). Some of the attendees included people in recovery themselves who shared their perspectives and experiences with their own families. The family members in attendance were able to gain empathy for their loved ones’ struggles by understanding the family dynamics through the addict’s perspective. This viewpoint also helped to create a dialogue that may allow them to see beyond their own frustrations. Participants asked and answered questions and shared opinions in this open and caring environment.
Other topics discussed during the Family Night group sessions included:
Attendees were quoted as saying:
- “I am thankful to hear what people in recovery thought about enabling and how it affected their path to sobriety.”
- “This group helps me so much, I am so grateful I am still able to attend this group even after my loved one has completed treatment with Cornerstone Recovery Center.”
Family Night is open to anyone who knows what it is like to see a loved one struggle with addiction or wants to learn more about the devastating effects of substance abuse. We are very proud of our Family Night events at Cornerstone Recovery Center because of the amazing feedback we have had from our past attendees. They have definitely embraced each other in support and have learned a great deal from the group discussions led by Cornerstone’s addiction recovery therapist, Barbara Hernandez, MS, LMHC. Stay tuned to The Cornerstone Recovery Center blog and Facebook page for announcements about future Family Night meetings.
