SMART Recovery is an abstinence-based program that teaches common sense self-help procedures designed to empower clients to abstain and to develop a more positive lifestyle. It uses a form of cognitive behavioral therapy called Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) to help individuals manage their beliefs and emotions that lead to drinking or using.
Psychologist Albert Ellis devised REBT in the’50s. It’s effective and widely accepted. REBT works from the notion that our thinking creates our feelings and leads us to act. By managing the beliefs and emotions that lead to drinking or using, we can empower ourselves to quit. In SMART Recovery, we focus on present-day events and the causes of self-destructive behaviors. We concentrate on what to do about them in order to achieve a positive lifestyle change, especially the parts of our lives that are connected with drinking or using.
In SMART Recovery meetings we focus on:
- Enhancing motivation
- Refusing to act on urges to use
- Managing life’s problems in a sensible and effective way without substances
- Developing a positive, balanced, and healthy lifestyle
We believe that an effective drug and alcohol treatment program should be customized to an individual’s needs to achieve and maintain recovery. That is why we offer clients a variety of group therapy programs.
